Ebook About Approach life at home the Madame Chic way: a beautiful, illustrated toolbox of tips and ideas for organizing, entertaining, and savoring a stylish life. When she arrived at Madame Chic’s Parisian apartment as a foreign exchange student, Jennifer Scott was a casual California girl who thought sweatpants were appropriate street attire. Madame Chic took Jennifer under her wing and tutored her in the secrets of how the French elevate the little things in life to the art of living. Years later, Jennifer was back in California with a husband, two young daughters, a dog, and her first home. Every day she confronted mundane duties like folding laundry and unloading the dishwasher, and she began to think about Madame Chic’s home—how the breakfast table was set beautifully the night before, the music that always played in the background, the calm of Madame and Monsieur Chic’s ritual cocktail hour together. Jennifer wanted that life. She decided to see what would happen if she didn’t perform her chores impatiently or mindlessly, if, instead, she could live like Madame Chic. At Home with Madame Chic reveals the secrets to having a happy, fulfilling, and passionate life at home. Jennifer explains the morning send-off need not be chaotic, it’s possible to look stylish with minimal time and effort, a little forethought makes it possible to serve a home-cooked dinner every night, and details like music and scented candles can set the tone for the whole family’s evening. Organized by the pleasures that can be found throughout the day, this charming, helpful book is full of ideas, playlists, recipes, beauty routines, and advice that can turn an irritating day into an enjoyable experience.Book At Home with Madame Chic: Becoming a Connoisseur of Daily Life Review :
I lived in France as an exchange student, and my host mother was exactly like Madame Chic, as were many of my friends' host mothers. They did not seem at all conflicted about "having it all", and I admired their ease in their roles as housewives. However, I feel compelled to point out that the "French" model is not in reality what one may want to import. Yes, we ate a three course meal every night, together, with the table set as described in the book. But here's the rub: two or three nights a week, this dinner was not ready until 9 or 10 pm. Also, my French mom was constantly up and down from the table, getting those three courses served. Without an employee, it is not physically possible to serve a three course meal without someone getting up and down to warm and fetch those courses!! This book would have us aspiring to serve three course dinners every night, while never getting up from the table. Just not possible! The French don't snack? The kids did snack. They would wolf down croissants with chocolate spread every day at about 5:30 because, well, they might not be able to eat dinner until 10. It wasn't just like this in my family; it was in everyone else's host family too. Like Madame Chic, my host mother looked impeccable, always. She wore gold earrings, low-heeled pumps, a white buttoned shirt, and a blue linen skirt and jacket set, or her green linen set. I never saw her in anything else for the entire three months I lived there. Shame on the 10 item wardrobe -- how about 5? ;) At first I thought this book was silly, but then I was won over by Ms. Scott's honesty of how it can feel being a stay-at-home Mom of young children. For this, it was worth the read. But seriously. Even if you could run your household like Madame, would you really want to? Just take the author's advice if you are a stay-at-home-Mom: Embrace it. Model the behavior you want to see in your kids. Be organized, but don't try to control everything. Take everything else with a grain of salt. Like many of Jennifer's readers, I started off with her first book, "Lessons from Madame Chic" and loved it so much that I had to check out the others. Honestly, as much as I love "Lessons" and "Polish Your Poise," I think this title is my favorite of the three. I enjoy Jennifer's wisdom and candor into making the seemingly mundane every life into something to celebrate and look forward to. While I do not have any children, I do have a husband and large breed dog who keep me on my toes and my home not always the tidiest. At some point through the months, I find myself falling off the homemaking wagon by just becoming lazy or getting busy with other things. I inevitably fall into the habit of "I'll clean the house this weekend when I have more time," or turning to frozen convenience meals because I don't feel like cooking. While this is OK for awhile, it does tend to get to me after awhile and I find myself becoming cranky from the mess and clutter and not feeling my best from lack of nutritious homemade meals. All I need to do is pull out "At Home with Madame Chic" and it gives me the motivation I need to start taking care of my home, my family and myself again. I would also highly recommend the Audible version. I love listening to it while I'm doing housework, driving, or even listening to it at night to help me fall asleep! There's something so cozy and comforting about the narrator's voice (although I would've loved if Jennifer herself would've narrated it!) and the content. Definitely a must for anyone looking for some motivation at home or just a fun, cozy read!
